Store From our own local ranks come some great CD recordings:
The Irish traditional singing scene is blessed with many fine singers. Despite all the external influences of the past century, there are still very strong traces of Sean Nós in our English language singing tradition. In this regard Alice Fitzgerald ranks with the best. She was born Allice Morrissey in the heart of Tepperary and reared in the jusical environment of that County renowned for its pride in Nation and Tradition. For many years she has been involved iwth Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in Co. Waterford and she has een a pivotal performer and producer in countless shows and concerts. She has also received many accolades in Amateur Drama circles, and indeed for permformance she is unspurpassed in giving a song. Alice has participated in numerous Comhaltas tours nationally and internationally as well as being a guest of many Singers Clubs and this CD is long awaited by all those who have heard her sing. In this CD we hear "The Songs I Sing" - the songs we like to hear Alice sing. She has made these songs her own. Her interpretation and clarity of expression is unequalled. Micheál Marrinan's roots are in West Clare, the home of traditional music and song. His own songs and ballads have over the years given joy to many in blissful sessions of weekend singing. His ballad making style echoes the brilliance of the revered rhymers of old using musical assonance to intone his stories. There is music in the receciting of his songs. He ambles from the serious to the fivolus with equal fluency, from being "Homesick in New York" - a delightful composiiton greatly enhanced by delicate guitar accompaniment - to keeping ahead of the posse after the Kilbrien Church frolics. His feeling for subject in "The Island of Australia" is heart stirring and his sensitive treatment of the blossoming of early love, lost in the West Clare of his youth, reminds us all of the Ruth we once knew. Michael resides in the cultural cosiness of 'The Decies' living close to nature - by a well of spring water, you might imagine; his eyes peeled, ears pricked, his mind clocking ninety, reporting the misdeeds of the speculator, the legacy of binder twine or composing from a bar stool.
